Legend Cars Western Australia
MELVIN MAKES IT FOUR FROM FOUR...
The roar of engines echoed through Albany Speedway on Saturday night as the 2025/2026 TKL Contractors Legend Cars Western Australia Championship Series delivered an absolute show stopper. When the dust settled and the chequered flag flew, it was veteran racer Ken Melvin standing atop the podium, but the journey to get there was anything but straightforward.
Albany Speedway pulled out all the stops for their milestone 60th anniversary celebration, and the Legend Cars division answered the call with sixteen competitors ready to put on a show. The "60 Laps for 60 Years" event featured multiple categories throughout the night, but the Pro Legends Division stole the spotlight with six intense heat races building toward a feature that had everyone on the edge of their seats.
The night kicked off with Heat 1, where Ken Melvin immediately stamped his authority on proceedings by taking the win. It was a statement of intent from the experienced campaigner, showing he'd come to Albany with speed to burn. The competition was fierce from the opening lap, with drivers jostling for position and valuable championship points.
Heat 2 saw Travis Gould emerge victorious, proving he had the pace to match Melvin. Gould's smooth driving style and race craft were on full display as he navigated the Albany circuit with precision, setting himself up as a genuine threat for the feature race.
The action intensified in Heat 3 when Mark Maczek threw his hat in the ring with a commanding heat win. Maczek demonstrated impressive speed and car control, weaving through traffic and showing the kind of form that makes Legend Cars racing so unpredictable and exciting.
Heat 4 belonged to Ken Melvin once again. His second heat victory of the night wasn't just about raw speed, it was a masterclass in consistency and race craft. While others were pushing hard and making mistakes, Melvin kept his cool and let the wins come to him.
Heat 5 delivered one of the night's most dramatic moments. Greg Joss crossed the line first, celebrating what looked like a well-earned heat victory. But motorsport can be cruel. When Joss's car hit the scales in post race scrutineering, it came up light. The heartbreaking disqualification handed the win to Steve Barrow, a reminder that in Legend Cars racing, it's not just about speed, every detail matters, right down to the last kilogram.
By the time Heat 6 rolled around, the field was fired up and ready to make one final statement before the main event. The racing was close, competitive, and exactly what Legend Cars W.A is all about, wheel to wheel action that keeps fans and competitors alike coming back for more.
With the heat races complete, it was time for the main event, the twenty lap Busselton Bitumen & Civil A-main. The top eight finishers from the heats were inverted, which meant the fastest drivers would have to carve their way through traffic to claim victory. This put Alyvia Ferraro and Phil Nicols on the front row, ready to lead the field to green.
From the drop of the green flag, the race was on. Ken Melvin, starting deeper in the field due to his strong heat performances, wasted no time going to work. He positioned his car perfectly, made the right moves at the right times, and when opportunities presented themselves, he pounced. Carving through the field with surgical precision, Melvin demonstrated exactly why he's one of the division's most respected competitors.
Travis Gould was equally impressive, methodically picking off positions and applying relentless pressure as he worked his way forward. The two veterans put on a masterclass in race craft, showing the younger drivers how it's done.
When the chequered flag flew after twenty hard fought laps, Melvin had done it, victory from deep in the pack. Gould's second place was no consolation prize, it was a solid points haul and proof that he'll be a championship contender all season long. Greg Joss rounded out the podium in third, capping off a strong night for the experienced racer despite the earlier heartbreak in Heat 5.
Steve Barrow put together a consistent run to claim fourth, while Phil Nicols brought it home in fifth, both drivers banking valuable championship points in the season opener.
One of the night's most impressive performances came from Alyvia Ferraro, who piloted her Legend Car to a brilliant sixth- place finish. In a field stacked with experienced racers, Ferraro held her own and proved once again why she's one of the most exciting talents in the division.
Nathan Ferraro followed closely behind in seventh, making it a strong night for the Ferraro racing family. Cody Roberts had to settle for eighth after a hard fought feature race, while Robbie Trenaman and Russell Seery completed the top ten in ninth and tenth respectively.
Brittany Nash showcased the depth of female talent in Legend Cars W.A with a solid eleventh-place finish, battling hard throughout the feature and never giving an inch. Tony Smith rounded out the finishers in twelfth, bringing his car home to the chequered flag.
Unfortunately, the demanding nature of speedway racing took its toll on several competitors. Ben Boyd, Wayne Campbell, and Mark Maczek all failed to finish the feature, while Brad McGregor was unable to start after his earlier crash during the heat races. It's a reminder that while Legend Cars racing is affordable and accessible, it's still proper motorsport where mechanical reliability and staying out of trouble are just as important as outright speed.
The beauty of Legend Cars racing was on full display at Albany. Sixteen competitors ranging from teenagers to seasoned veterans, all running door to door in identical machinery where driver skill makes the difference. It's affordable motorsport at its finest, and nights like this remind us why this division continues to grow year after year.
The championship doesn't wait around. Round 5 of the TKL Contractors Championship Series gets underway at Geraldton City Speedway on Saturday, November 22nd. Will Ken Melvin continue his winning form, or will Travis Gould and the rest of the field have an answer? One thing's for certain, if Geraldton delivers even half the excitement we saw at Albany, fans are in for an absolute treat.
