MELVIN BACK ON TOP

Collie Speedway delivered the second chapter of the A1 Bin Hire + Collie Bin Hire Coal Cup exactly the way Collie does it…. fast pace, thin margins, and a night where the story changed corner by corner.

From the first roll out you could tell it was going to be one of those nights where you don’t get to “settle in”… you’re either on it, or you’re in the fence.

The first major swing came in Heat 4. Kim Williams crashed into the Turn 1 wall, and not long after Michael Cook also found the wall on the back straight while fighting for the lead. Kim and the crew thrashed and got the car repaired to keep him in the show, but Cook’s 7W was done for the night with chassis damage, a huge moment in the Coal Cup story considering what he’d shown the night before.

Even with that chaos, the heat still had to be won, and Wayne Campbell drove it through to take the win, with Robbie Trenaman and Zoe Eason right there behind him, banking solid points and keeping their cars straight when the night was already getting edgy.

By Heat 5, the pace was properly on and the front runners started laying down intent. Ken Melvin was clinical, tidy, fast, and relentless, taking the win ahead of Campbell and Greg Joss.

Then Heat 6 added one more twist before the green even mattered. Ryan Davis and Kye Cook came together before the start, forcing Kye to retire from the heat and instantly changing the shape of the night.

Once it got going, Melvin again controlled the front to win Heat 6, with Joss second and Campbell third, three drivers who looked like they were building for the A-Main while everyone else was just trying to survive the margins.

Then came the main event, 35 laps, and nowhere to hide. The yellows were out on Lap 1 when Campbell spun in Turn 3. That brought a complete restart and sent Campbell to the rear, turning his night into a recovery mission. The race settled into a long haul rhythm, right up until Lap 11 when a mechanical failure sent Rob Trenaman hard into the turn 3 wall.

He walked away okay, but the incident reshuffled the deck again and reminded everyone how quickly Collie can take it away.

Out front, Melvin was the constant, calm, composed, and always in the right spot, he managed the interruptions and drove it home for the win, now only one win away from pocketing the $???? ???????????????????? ????????????.

Ryan Davis backed up his comeback weekend with a massive second place, and Campbell’s restart setback didn’t stop him charging back through to third. With the 7W sidelined, Kye Cook stepped out of his car and Michael Cook raced the 96W in the A-Main, salvaging the night and then earning the Collie Machine Shop Hard Charger Award after moving forward six positions.

A massive thank you to Greg and Tracey Joss for their continued support, not just of the Collie Bin Hire Coal Cup, but of Legend Cars WA as a whole. The time, effort, and backing you both put into this division doesn’t go unnoticed by the drivers, the crews, or the people behind the scenes. We genuinely appreciate everything you do to help keep this class moving forward.

Up next for our ?????????????? is Mount Barker Speedway Club on February 14th for R10 of the TKL Contractors Pty Ltd Championship Series.
